Customer Service

How do library programs and services relate to customer service? Librarians deal very heavily with the public. If the public is not happy, then they are less likely to visit the library. Patron activity is what helps keep funding in a library, so it is a chain reaction: unhappy patrons leads to lack of patrons which leads to lack of funding.  How do library programs and services impact the surrounding community and meet diverse user needs? Libraries must react to how a community responds to its services and programs. For instance, my local library uses an app that has e-books, audiobooks, music, and movies for patrons' use. Normally, the library allows only 10 borrows of any kind per month. However, with the COVID-19 pandemic, the library is temporarily allowing 20 borrows per month. They understand that patrons cannot access the library directly, and this is a good temporary substitute.  How do libraries need to be prepared to meet the changing needs of the communi...

Promotions and Social Media

Discuss which promotion ideas you find most valuable and why. The promotion ideas I find most valuable are those that people can relate to.  Memes are the way some people, especially those who are younger, communicate. They are usually funny, and if you can make a person laugh, they are likely to be curious as to who is making the funny material.  Social media is an excellent tool to use for promotions. Personally, when I am looking at a business, I check their Facebook page if they have one. If they have one and I have a question, they are more likely to answer a Facebook message than an email in a fast manner. It is also a good way for people to see your events, better than a blog or website.  Some of the suggestions could be interpreted as “tooting your own horn.” Describe how comfortable you are with promoting your library in that manner. I want my library to be successful, and I want to celebrate in those successes when they happen. I want to share it ...

New Programs

The Colleton County Memorial Library has a few programs that are available to the community.  "The Illustrate-A-Book (IAB) program was created by Children’s Librarian Shiela M. Keaise at the  Colleton County Memorial Library to encourage talented children to find pleasure in reading and to get them motivated to make a difference in their community. Since creative, gifted, talented, and bright children frequently experience restlessness, inattention, and day-dreaming, the IAB’s mission  is to re-channel their behavior while providing fulfillment and accomplishment." This is a wonderful program because it allows young readers to discover the love of reading through art. In order to illustrate a story, you have to know the story.  The Magic: The Gathering Club allows Middle and High School students to come together to learn how to play the card game Magic: The Gathering. This is a great program for middle and high school students because some teenagers like the c...

Programs and Services

For some libraries, different programs and services are where they see the most traffic to and from the building. Some services I would love to see implemented in my local library are: Laptop borrowing 3D printing Passes or discounted rates to local museums or educational attractions Delivery service Language classes Poetry night I think that all of these bullet points would benefit the area residents in some way.  The ability to borrow a laptop could potentially help someone find a job through online job searches.  3D printing would allow the children of the rural area I live in to experience the feeling of 3D printing, because it would be cool.  Passes or discounted rates to local museums and educational attractions would drive business to those places and allow those places to flourish.  Delivery services would greatly benefit people who are not able to leave their homes, as well as people that have limited mobility. My first thought is a retireme...

Colleton County Memorial Library

Colleton County Memorial Library The Colleton County Memorial Library (CCML) services the Colleton County area. There are three libraries in this system serving the residents. This library has several collections for all ages with all interests, such as Young Adult Children's Services South Carolina Reference Graphic Novels I chose this library because it is my local library, and I have the most experience with it. I frequent this library, and I enjoy the atmosphere. CCML does not currently have a blog. I think that the director would not mind if I made one that was updated frequently, but I am not sure if the library would need it, as it is a smaller branch. A blog would be useful for keeping up-to-date information, such as events, club meetings, and book reviews.  Depending how the blog is utilized and advertised, a blog could be beneficial to a library. As stated above, it can provide up-to-date information about the upcoming events at the library, as well as c...
