New Programs
The Colleton County Memorial Library has a few programs that are available to the community.
"The Illustrate-A-Book (IAB) program was created by Children’s Librarian Shiela M. Keaise at the Colleton County Memorial Library to encourage talented children to find pleasure in reading and to get them motivated to make a difference in their community. Since creative, gifted, talented, and bright children frequently experience restlessness, inattention, and day-dreaming, the IAB’s mission is to re-channel their behavior while providing fulfillment and accomplishment." This is a wonderful program because it allows young readers to discover the love of reading through art. In order to illustrate a story, you have to know the story.
The Magic: The Gathering Club allows Middle and High School students to come together to learn how to play the card game Magic: The Gathering. This is a great program for middle and high school students because some teenagers like the card games, and to have the ability to play these games with like-minded individuals can help with self-esteem, bullying, and depression.
For adults, there is a popular fiction book club that meets once a month. I have not been to this so I do not have much information on it other than the meeting frequency and time (which is currently on hold due to COVID-19), but this program would be good for those who like to read popular fiction books.
In my previous post, I touched on a few programs and services I thought were interesting. I am going to go in more depth about how I think these services would benefit CCML.
Laptop borrowing is a service I think would be SO helpful for, well, anyone. Not everyone has the time or availability to go to the local library during their hours and research the internet for whatever they need. The ability to borrow a laptop would open doors for those people taking college classes and work night shift. Their schedule probably makes it difficult to go to the library during their regular hours, and if they borrowed a laptop from the library, they could do their work and have the peace of mind that they would not get behind.
Language classes is something I think needs to happen. There are people in my community that speak different languages, and this can create barriers. If there was a language class, those barriers could get broken, which would allow those people to be able to communicate with other members of the community, apply for jobs, etc.
To reiterate, the mission for CCML is "The Colleton County Memorial Library is dedicated to providing free and equal access to expertly chosen resources and reliable information and to fostering lifelong learning and the joys of reading. Our services are driven by community needs and are provided in a welcoming, responsive and professional manner."
